"Les Grèves" 1er cru de Beaune 2007

The vintage

For those of us who like fresh and refreshing wines with fairly low alcohol and bright acidity accompanied by correct aromatic and phenolic maturities, we have been waiting for this vintage for a long time ! The hot and warm months of April and May forewarned an early harvest, likely at the end of August, but the weather changed to chilly and rainy for the rest of the summer. We pushed back the harvest dates because, as was generally the case for this vintage, one of the keys to success was that it could not be rushed. We started at

the very end of August with the reds, and after a few days break, we picked the whites.

The reds show a very fresh nose with vibrant red fruit aromas of raspberry and red currant along with floral notes. We chose to use a significant portion of whole clusters in the fermentation because the grape and stem quality was high. The mouthfeels are full, fleshy and generous. The noses are vibrantly intense ; the tannins are fine, silky and integrated with the fruit ; and overall, there is a sensation of balance and freshness that persists through the long, mineral finish. As for whites, the 2007 vintage represents what we like in noble white wines : grace, heightened minerality and lots of restraint..

Tasting notes

-Racked during the harvest and now in cuve. Good full red. Offering black cherry, licorice, spices and minerals. A step up in flavor intensity and energy; 88-90 Stephen Tanzer

-66% stems. Here there is a more obvious floral and spice influence to the earthier and more serious, even somber dark berry fruit aromas that introduce cool, intense and almost pungently mineral-infused medium weight flavors blessed with plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, all wrapped in a firm and impressively long finish. This should reward up to a decade of cellar time, perhaps a bit more. Sweet spot Outstanding - Tasted: May 06, 2011 - Score: 91-93 Drink: 2019+ Allen Meadows

-Intense, very ripe fruit on the nose. Good freshness. Quite a nervy wine for a 2009 red. Still very youthful – a big contrast to the Sizies. 17, Drink 2017-2025 Jancis Robinson

-The2009 Beaune Les Greves is a weighty, powerful wine graced with a solid core of fruit. Hints of smoke, tar and ash add complexity to the dark fruit. This has more than enough energy and sheer heft to develop nicely for at least a few years in bottle. Crushed rocks frame the intense finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Rating 90+ - Maturity Drink: 2014 - 2024
